What can we expected from this error?
This is the most common 3D printing problem and probably the first one you encounter. The first layer is important because it is the base of the print. So if it’s not perfect, you’re more likely to get it misprinted. Many common 3D printing problems are caused by a bad first layer. Problems can occur when printing the first layer so let’s see what we can do to avoid these problems. Print surfaces need regular maintenance to ensure optimal print quality and minimize the risk of printing errors. Check out our tips and recommendations for easy steps.
How you must prepare your printing surface
If the print surface isn’t in contact with your hands or dirty tools, you don’t need to clean it after each print. Clean the tool just like the base and you’ll be ready to start your next print in no time.
Isopropyl alcohol
To get the best adhesion from the printed surface it is important to keep it clean. The best choice for printing on ABS, PLA, and many other materials is 90% isopropyl alcohol, commonly available at hardware stores and pharmacies. We recommend always using 90% IPA. Low percentage solutions may contain inappropriate chemicals or oils.
Recommendation – Adhesive tape
As an extra recommendation or tip, you can add to your print surface adhesive tape, this surface is rougher and helps the material adhere better to this surface and does not lift.

First Layer Height
If your printer has the nozzle too close to the print surface, there is not enough free space for the polymer to exit the extruder. It will effectively block the orifice and not extrude the plastic. This issue is easy to spot if your printer isn’t extruding plastic on the first layer or both.
Below you can see an image that shows the three scenarios where you can be. The first scenario is the the one you want to be, which is when the distance between the nozzle and print bed is perfect, not too high neither too low. The second one is when there isn’t enough space between them, and the last one is when those elements have exceeded free space, a lot of height.

Room Temperature
This is a really important aspect, that’s why some printers have enclosure architecture, and other times you have had successfully printings because of the high temperature you have used. But, if you could control better this aspect, you will have better 3D printings.
